Sometimes I pick something up in Superdrug and I take it to the till thinking, “This is crap. You know this is crap. Why are you buying this?” This is one of those items. I’d picked up my trusty favourite, One By One and a Colour Tattoo in Permanent Taupe, and, with nothing else I wanted on the 3-for-2, I grabbed this. I knew it was crap, but I bought it anyway. Why do I do it?!
The product in question is Maybelline Illegal Lengths mascara. It’s supposed to be a fibre mascara, which has fibres in that build up on your lashes and make them much longer.
This packaging is one of the cheapest pieces of crap I’ve ever felt. I’ve already scratched some of the silver off, and it feels super light. When you take the brush out, there’s no resistance, it’s like the bottle neck is too large for the brush.
The brush itself is very long, and the bristles are quite sparse. Not my favourite type of brush, but that’s just me.
Um. Are there fibres in this? *squints* Straight away I thought this just wasn’t going to work for me. I really don’t like wet mascara formulas, I just think they always end up looking really natural and they’re not buildable. Anyway, let’s slap it on/
My bare eyeballs, obviously. As you can see I don’t have much in the way of length, volume or curl.
One coat.
Two coats.
Three coats.
Well…. yeah. This DOES make your lashes longer. So I can’t fault it on that claim, I guess. Does that mean I like it? No. It’s messy, the brush does nothing to separate my lashes and it doesn’t lengthen any better than any other mascara.
Basically. Save your pennies. Save yourselves.
I was extremely disappointed by this mascara also. I know some people really like it, but it just didn't work for me.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! You are not alone in the "I bought something crap from Superdrug" school of make up shopping...the thing is all those years ago, when we couldn't even get Maybelline in the UK like some Cold War sanctions were on, when I did get hold of one, it was crap. I cannot remember the times I read "supermodels favourite in the pink and green tube" what a load of tat! *huffs- but inside is happy to have got that off one's chest*
ReplyDeleteAww, I hate disappointing mascaras... I have had such bad luck with drugstore mascaras. I finally found a Prestige one that works for me (do you guys have Prestige?), but I have gone through so many crap tubes of CoverGirl and Maybelline mascaras. I hear people swear by their mascaras, though, so they must work for *someone*.
ReplyDeleteThis is what happened with that 17 Peep Show mascara. *wipes on hand* "... fibres? What fibres?!"
ReplyDeleteAw man, I was thinking about purchasing this other day, but I guess I know why it was on sale =/ though it does lengthen a bit, there are better mascaras out there. Btw I tagged you on my recent post, have a great weekend! :) http://www.vanessajhoy.com/2012/04/11-questions-tag.html
ReplyDeleteBoooo, sorry you didn't like it :( Works fine for me!
ReplyDeleteUrgh, I hate when mascaras do that. I feel like these work best for people who have naturally thicker (but not necessarily long) eyelashes, and everyone else might as well skip past it.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried NYC Showtime? It's a cheap drugstore mascara with a traditional brush---lots of bristles everywhere---but I like it quite a bit for thickening and layering.
"Save yourselves" LOL!!!! Yeah, I don't really like this mascara either. It lengthens, but it gives me no volume and it's flaky. BOOO.
ReplyDeleteAhh noo!! I was planning on buying this today... I still am planning to, but I'll just expect the worst now to avoid disappointment....I completely agree with you, I HATE the packaging, absolutely hate it! It's horrid! That's what put me off buying it when it was initially released on promotion...I guess I'll just whack it on and hope for the best
