Labyrinth Mini Series: Jareth

Had to get around to the Goblin King at some point, didn’t I? I toddled off to my makeup room with a copy of my DVD in hand, all ready to copy the basics and add a girly twist!

Well, who would have thunk it, drawing straight lines on one persons face might have a totally different result on someone else's face! Bowies eyes are much more hooded than mine, which means he had less of a crease to contend with when doing the outside ‘wing.’ part. I had to use a lot of liner on my top lid and fashion that part of the look as extended eyeliner because it was just looking weird and wrong and I couldn’t be bothered to cover my brows. Also, having looked at more stills to try and work out how I could have done a better adaptation for my eye shape, I’ve realised that the look is actually quite purple, and not black. So the look is a lot more different than I intended, but with all the graphic liners that have been floating around on catwalks and in editorials the last few seasons I’ll just pass this off as a modern adaptation, yes?

I still plan to do a more straight-up version of the look as a tutorial in time for Halloween, with the nose contouring and so on,  but I’ll be finding a male volunteer for that as I need more practice on dudes anyway and I want to tackle this look on someone with meatier eyebrows than mine.

Eyes: NYX JEP in Milk, MAC Gesso, Sleek Black, elf Lock N’ Seal, Urban Decay Perversion, Wet N Wild glitter
Face: Illamasqua Emerge, Sleek Suede, Boots No 7 Vital Enlightening Highlighter
Lips: MUA Juicy

You can see how I didn’t really manage to tackle this with my eye shape! I do love the brow part, however, and the last shot shows that even on me where this doesn’t work, from certain angles it looks quite cool. There’s a great look my my NARS book where the model just has the first half of her brow sketched in and I thought this would be a good time to play with that seeing as I didn’t really want to contour my entire nose! I added lashes and more obvious glitter (of COURSE he wears glitter!) to keep it feminine and went for a more pink-peach on the lips as opposed to Bowies nude-peach.

I’m also wondering if Bowie did his makeup for this movie, and who designed it. Does anyone know? The internet isn’t working for me on this one.

So yeah…. a wee bit of a fail, but experimentation FTW! And I will be revisiting this soon! I’ve really enjoyed doing the series and thanks to everyone who indulged my nerdiness on this one!

Labyrinth Mini Series Part 6: The Fireys

“GOOD TIMES, BAAAAAAD FOOOOOD!”

Not gonna lie, the Fireys creeped me out when I was a kid. Also, cheers for taking up a song space in which David Bowie could have been singing. With that in mind, I um… glued a bunch of stuff to my face?

Products: Lid and brows, Sugarpill Burning Heart Palette, Rimmel Brow Pencil in Dark Brown. Liner, Sugarpill Love+ and Elf Lock And Seal (Love+ scraped off with back of brush and mixed on back of hand so it didn’t ruin the pain). Inner corner, Sugarpill Tiara, white from Sleek Circus palette. “Feathers” from a pair of lashes, flakies are nail supplies from eBay.

Hmmm, not too sure of this one. It looks more like my eye is ready for Mardi Gras than looking anything like a Jim Henson character! I think I took the “fire” part a bit too literally. I should have also taken the fluffy parts down along to the end of the brow but it was a pain in the ass and they weren’t standing up. Ah well, any excuse to use Sugarpill Flamepoint, I suppose!

Labyrinth Mini Series Part 5: Sir Didymus!

LET US BE BROTHERS HENCEFORTH!

Ooooh, I do love Sir Didymus. Every girl needs a gallant knight to protect her and so much the better if he also rides an Old English Sheepdog!

Eyes: Sugarpill Love+, Sugarpill Goldilux, brown from Sleek Storm, Illamasqua Liquid Metal in Superior, blue from Sleek Storm, Barry M Dazzle Dusts in Emerald and Orange, Barry M Fine Glitter in Opal, Inglot Matte Gel Liner in 76, MAC Gesso.

Of all the looks I’ve done for this series, this is probably my least favourite. I really wanted to capture his awesome, OTT cloth-of-gold nobleman outfit, and I don’t think I nailed it..and the red isn’t the right redddd  and also I wanted the brows to represent his foxy-ness, and, and, and… and it just wasn’t really happening! Ah well. It’s not very Didymus-y, but I still kind of like it.

I know this was supposed to be a mini series, but I’ve got at *least* three more looks to do…

Labyrinth Mini Series Part 4: Toby

I knew I wanted to do something stripey to represent Toby, and considering all he does for the whole film is er, wear a stripey onsie, here's what I did!

toby 1
toby 2

NYX JEP in Milk, Detrivore Bone, Barry M Dazzle Dust in no 85 Cherry Red, Inglot Duraline, Inglot AMC Matte Gel Liner in 76.

The more I look at this, the more it bugs me! I wish I’d worked out a way to make it not a triple wing and something more round and cute and more like a baby! It was also a nightmare to do on my wrinkly lids, so there’s lots of imperfections which are doing my head in. However, I do like the triple wing and I might try to see if I can incorporate that into a future look without bringing it all the way through the lid. I added the little circles to represent to poppers on his little outfit, as that’s the only non-stripey detail!

This is Toby (real name, for those who aren’t Labyrinth geeks! Toby Froud is the son of Brian Froud, an amazing illustrator who did all the art and character design for the film) as a baby…

D’aww! And here’s Toby as an adult…

Not bad at all!

Labyrinth Mini Series Part 3: Ludo

SMELL…BAD!

Aw, Ludo is *so* adorable! He’s such a nice beast! I was really excited to do a look based by him. I was wondering how I would fit his horns in seeing as they’re really the wrong shape for liner, but I think working it into my crease shape actually turned out quite well.

I used: Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Permanent Taupe, Fyrinnae Damn Paladins, Sugarpill Flamepoint, Illamasqua Vapour, Fyrinnae Moon Child, dark brown from Sleek Storm Palette, Darling Girl Fire Inside, Barry M Dazzle Dust in 66, Inglot Duraline, Hi-Hi Cosmetics Down In The Underground, NYX JEP in Milk, FashionistA gel liner in Dressed Down Chic, Collection 2000 24/7 Extreme pen liner in black.

I wish I’d found a way to get his shagginess in, but there’s a lot going there already. Flamepoint is applied over Permanent Taupe, so that’s why it’s not as vibrant as it normally is – I didn’t want a super bright orange. Also, sorry for the messy part at the corner of my eye – it just kept watering and wouldn’t stop!

Labyrinth Mini Series Part 2: The Worm

The worm is SOCUTEOMFG. One of my favourite Henson creatures ever and there are so many fantastic ones in this film alone – if you’ve not seen it, it’s worth watching just for the fantastic puppetry! (See also: The Dark Crystal.)

I’ve got two looks for him, and now I look at them, I realise I should have gone with a more orangey red, espeically seeing as there’s a lot of red white and blue around today! Ah, well!

Eyes: NYX JEP in Milk, La Colours JEP in Bikini Time, MAC Gesso, Inglot AMC 317, Hi-Fi Cosmetics Mornings of Gold, Inglot AMC matte gel liner (red), Maybelline Eye Studio gel liner.
Cheeks: MAC Modern Mandarin
Lips: Wet n Wild Salsa Lessons

I really liked this look and thought it was kind of cute, but it’s not… The Worm-y enough?

Take 2…

Lid: From Sleek Storm Palette
Brows: Inglot AMC 371, e.l.f eyebrow and lash gel
Crease/Lower lashine: LA Colours Jumbo Eye Pencil in Bikini Time. Inglot AMC 317, blue from MUA Glamour Days Palette, Sleek Glitter liner in Carribean.
Liner: Sugarpill Love+ over LA Colours Jumbo Eye Pencil in Popsicle.

Obviously I went for a lot of blue in this look as well, and cute blue brows to represent all his little fluffy bits!

Man, I love the worm! <3

Labyrinth Mini Series Part 1: Sarah

Ohhhhh yes, kids! I’m going to do a little Labyrinth mini-series for you! Labyrinth is my favourite film and if you’re an even-slighty-geeky girl around my age, I bet it’s one of yours as well.

I’m going to kick it off with a really simple, pretty look inspired by Sarah, and then hopefully they’ll get a bit more exciting!

Sarah 1
Sarah 2

Eyes: Hi Fi Cosmetics Mornings of Gold, Sleek Eau La La Liner in Cocoa, dark brown from Sleek Storm Palette, MAC Gesso, Darling Girl Vicar in a Tutu,
Cheeks: Almay blush in 130 Peach, NYX Mosaic Highlighter, ELF Studio Radiance Enhancer
Lips: Wet and Wild MegaLast Lipstick in 909D, MAC Viva Glam Ricky lip balm.

Really really simple look for Sarah as she doesn’t wear much makeup, even in the ballroom scene. I didn’t think doing something fussy would work for her. I went much thicker on my brows that I normally would, a la Jennifer Connelly, and kept the eyes really subtle and shimmer. The lid is more of a white-gold, more like her waistcoat she wears throughout the film and then the inner corner has more of a green shift, more like her ballgown dress. I could have used things with less of a pink shift to them, but Mornings of Gold is from Hi-Fi’s old Labyrinth collection so pretty appropriate!

I went for coral lips, like the lipstick she uses to draw her marks when she’s in the Labyrinth and a coral flush to match even though Jennifer is pretty pale. (Would you not be blushing around David Bowies “bump”? You totes would.)

Stay tuned for some funkier Labyrinth looks, folks!
